Director Ranjith Sankar’s Sunny has been bringing in more laurels for its lead actor Jayasurya. After clinching the Best Actor honour at this year’s Kerala State Film Awards, the Mollywood artiste has now bagged the Best Actor award at the 20th Dhaka International Film Festival in the Asian Film category for his performance in Sunny.
While the filmmaker and actor couldn’t attend the function due to the pandemic restrictions, they had shared the news through their social media page. Sunny, a single-actor movie, had Jayasurya playing its titular character, who after losing his money and family comes back to Kerala from Dubai during the pandemic and quarantines at a hotel, during which he is introduced to a bunch of strangers who change his perspective in life.
The movie had Jayasurya putting on a remarkable performance as an alcoholic, who goes through the ups and downs of life, before he looks within himself to regain hope. Majority of the supporting characters in the movie make their presence felt through phone conversations.
Incidentally, this is his third collaboration with Ranjith Sankar that has earned him a major award after Su.. Su.. Sudhi Vathmeekam fetched him a Special Mention at the 2015 National Film Awards and Njan Marykutty won him the Best Actor honour at the Kerala State Film Awards in 2018.
Meanwhile, this year’s Dhaka International Film Festival also saw several acclaimed Malayalam movies being screened including Martin Prakkat’s Nayattu, Dr Biju’s The Portraits, Shareef Easa’s Andaal and Siddhartha Siva’s Ennivar. From the 220 movies screened from 70 countries, Tamil film The Pebbles was picked as the Best Film.
Jayasurya is next set for the release of Nadirshah’s Eesho. He has also wrapped up shooting for G Prajesh Sen’s Meri Awaaz Suno and Abhijith Joseph’s John Luther, which he is currently dubbing for.
