Konkona Sen Sharma speaks about fatherhood premium and motherhood penalty, and urges the government needs to intervene for a change

Metro In Dino actor Konkona Sen Sharma has addressed the rising issue of work-life balance in her recent interview. This happens in lieu of the rising debate on the topic which was addressed by Deepika Padukone as well. She demanded an eight-hour working shift, which gave rising to the debate of work-life balance in India. Konkona has now compared the same to 'fatherhood premium' and 'motherhood penalty.' While talking to Firstpost, Konkona Sen Sharma said that she believes there's motherhood penalty across industries. "It’s called the fatherhood premium and the motherhood penalty," the actress, soon to be seen in Metro In Dino, said.
The actress further explains that fathers start earning more after having children and becoming senior. "But for women with every child, there is a financial setback because you’re not able to kind of participate in the way society expects you to or for that matter what the office work demands," she explains.
Konkona then went on to talk about how the balance between work life demands and being a good mother has become more difficult. She asks the government to step in and change policies for working mothers. "Otherwise it’s not going to happen," she signs off.
Directed by Anurag Basu, Metro In Dino is the sequel to Life In A Metro. The movie features Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Ali Fazal, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, Anupam Kher and Saswata Chatterjee in the lead roles apart from Konkona. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on July 4, 2025.
