Thalapathy Vijay, the biggest crowd-puller of Tamil cinema started off his acting career with the boy-next-door roles. The Master actor had one of the biggest successes of his career in 2000, with the romantic comedy film Kushi, directed by SJ Suryah. The movie, which featured Vijay and popular actress Jyotika in the lead roles, won millions of hearts with his making, performances, humour, and songs. Kushi completed 24 years of its release on May 19, 2024.

Here are the reasons to revisit Kushi on Aha Tamil and OTTplay Premium

Vijay and Jyotika’s onscreen chemistry

It is a joy to watch Thalapathy Vijay and Jyotika’s performance as Shiva and Jenny, the young lovers who are destined to be together, in this SJ Suryah directorial. The crowd puller of Tamil cinema and celebrated actress shared an infectious chemistry onscreen. Especially, the scenes in which their characters go through major ego clashes, are very well written and brilliantly performed.

The unique love story

Director SJ Suryah gave the usual boy-meets-girl kind of love story a very interesting twist, with Kushi. Here, the protagonists meet each other when they are just infants, and instantly develop a bond with each other. Even though Shiva and Jenny’s bond develops further when they meet after almost two decades in college, their big ego always plays the spoilsport. Unlike the Tamil films of that time, Kushi explored the love story of two highly flawed people.

Vivek and the humour

Well, it is impossible to remember the Tamil films of the 2000s without mentioning Vivek, the gifted actor who created wonders on the silver screen with his impeccable comic timing. The veteran actor played the role of Vicky, the senior student who always entertains others with his one-liners, in Kushi. The actor’s portions in the film alone are worth revisiting.

The memorable soundtrack

Legendary musician Deva composed songs and original score for Kushi. The memorable soundtrack, especially Jyotika’s introduction song ‘Megham Karukkuthu’, Vijay’s special number with Shilpa Shetty ‘Macarena’, the campus celebration song ‘Oru Ponnu Onnu’, the romantic number ‘Yaar Solvathu’, and the item number ‘Kattipudi’ (even though it contributed nothing to the plot), emerged as instant chartbusters.
