It’s the election season, and the scent of politics is in the air. With the first phase of polling for Lok Sabha elections beginning on April 19, let’s take a moment to know how politics have always been entwined with cinema, especially in Tamil Nadu. Tamil cinema too has a fair percentage of its stories dedicated to political genre. On that note, here are five politically-charged films you can stream, from the comfort of your homes.
Maanaadu is a political thriller, directed by filmmaker Venkat Prabhu. The film is headlined by Silambarasan and SJ Suryah. Maanaadu is about a Muslim NRI man played by Simbu who comes down to India to attend his friend’s wedding. But in a strange chain of events, gets stuck in a time loop and entrusted with the responsibility of stopping the assassination of state’s chief minister. Maanaadu talks about the perspective that society builds on certain group of people.
A remake of Hindi film Article 15, Nenjuku Needhi is political drama directed by Arunraja Kamaraj. The film is headlined by Udhayanidhi Stalin and follows the aftermath police procedural after three girls from oppressed background are found murdered after harassment. Aari Arujunan, Tanya Ravichandran, and Shivani Rajashekar play prominent roles in the film.
Directed by Mari Selvaraj, Maamannan is a political social drama featuring Udhayanidhi Stalin, Vadivelu and Fahadh Faasil in the lead roles. The film talks about the oppression and caste hierarchy prevalent in the politics. Using pigs as a metaphor, and showing Vadivelu in a serious avatar as opposed to his comic roles, Maamannan released last year to positive reception and received thunderous applause for the lead cast’s performances.

Citizen is a political action thriller directed by Saravana Subbiah. The film stars Ajith Kumar in dual roles along with Meena, Vasundhara Das, Nagma and others. The film follows a mechanic who turns into a vigilante when no one notices and punishes those who were responsible for destroying his village for their own greedy wants. The film became a commercial success.
Anniyan is directed by S Shankar and stars Vikram in the lead role. The film revolves around Ambi, a person hailing from a privileged background and is strict on following the rules by the law. However, after he suffers from multiple personality disorder due to the corruption in the society, Ambi begins to develop alternate personalities to fulfil is unsatisfied wants. Vivekh, Prakash Raj, Sadha and others appear in prominent roles.
