The movie centers on banker Andy Dufresne, who is given a life sentence in Shawshank State Penitentiary for killing his wife and her lover, even though he repeatedly says he is innocent. Over the next twenty years, he becomes friends with fellow prisoner "Red", and helps prison warden Samuel Norton manage his finances. Tim Robbins plays Andy, while Morgan Freeman and Bob Gunton appear in key roles in the movie, directed by Frank Darabont.

He is left with custody of his son after his wife leaves him. The film is set in 1981 in San Francisco. Smith's son  Jaden  plays Gardner's son in his feature debut.

Helmed by Noah Baumbach, the movie secured six nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Original Screenplay, among others.

At the 83rd Academy Awards, it won accolades for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing.
