Thirteen Lives is a 2022 biographical survival film written and directed by William Nicholson and based on the Tham Luang cave rescue. Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, Joel Edgerton, and Tom Bateman star in the movie. On June 23, 2018, 12 boys from a junior football team, the Wild Boars and their assistant coach, Ekkaphon Chanthawong, went to explore the Tham Luang cave. When the group didn't show up for a birthday celebration, their families went in search for them. This led to a rescue operation involving the emergency services.

Mendez oversaw the group's successful rescue of the six diplomats while they were in Tehran, during the hostage crisis that lasted from 1979 to 1981.
