Thanks to shows like American Horror Story, we have had the fortune of enjoying some nitty-gritty and heart wrenching portrayals of the LGBTQ+ community, ranging from The Hotel’s transgender bartender Liz Taylor to The Asylum’s lesbian reporter Lana Winters. As the LGBTQ+ community is finally getting the appreciation and respect they commonly deserve, the entertainment industry is doing justice to them as well. Watch these five LGBTQ+ shows to enjoy exceptional portrayals of love, heartbreak, sacrifice, and happiness.

Euphoria

This teen drama series, premiered on HBO in 2019. The story followed the story of Rue, a recovering queer drug addict, and her high school friends as they navigate life, relationships, work, studies and mental health in this raw yet alluring series. The series showed a beautiful bond blooming between Rue and Jules, a transgender girl, as they explore issues of identity, sexuality, addiction, and intimacy together. The series is available to stream on Jio Cinema.

Uncoupled

This comedy series focuses on the gay dating situation when one is in their 40s. Premiering on Netflix in 2022, the series is currently in the middle of shooting its second season. Uncoupled follows Neil Patrick Harris as Michael Lawson, a gay real estate agent who abruptly gets dumped by his longtime partner Colin, after 17 years, in a surprise party thrown by the former for the latter. It's difficult adjusting to being single in your late 40s, but as a gay dude, it's even harder as the dating game has changed.

Sex Education

This British teenage sex comedy series was created for Netflix by Laurie Nunn, and premiered on 2019. It ran for 4 seasons before concluding this year. Though primarily following the story of Otis Milburn, teenage son of celebrated sex therapist Dr. Jean Milburn, and how his own brand of medically accurate sex-pertise helps educate his fellow students on how to treat their own bodies, sexualities, and relationships. A beautiful way of educating people about sexuality and basic sex-ed, the series features several promising LGBT relationships among students.

Heartstopper

This British bildungsroman is a sweet rom com that explores issues like bullying, abuse, eating disorders, trauma, sex-change operations, love, and friendship. Based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novel and web comic of the same name, the series mainly focuses on the developing love story between Charlie Spring, a gay teen and Nick Nelson, his bisexual classmate. But it also traces the lives and relationships of their best friends Tao, Elle, Isaac, Tara, and Darcy.

The Haunting of Bly Manor

The gothic series begins by declaring that it is a love story and is among Mike Flanagan’s masterpieces. Premiering on Netflix in 2020, the series based off Henry James’ novella Turn of the Screw enjoyed massive popularity. This non-linear narrative tells the story of a young au pair, who arrives at Bly Manor to look after a rich man’s niece and nephew but encounters terrifying secrets about her new home while hiding a few of her own. A real tearjerker, this lesbian love story will have you revisiting it again and again.
