Vikrant Massey’s latest onscreen venture comes in the form of Love Hostel. The film handles a sensitive subject, that of honour killings, through its thrilling story, and has been on the receiving end of many good reviews, especially for the stellar performances by its main cast.

But it seems that Massey’s applauded performance came at a cost, as the actor recently opened up about the emotional turmoil his role put him through.

In conversation with The Indian Express, the actor talked of the ‘ups and downs’ he went through while filming, revealing that he and co-star Sanya Malhotra even had to get therapy. He said that his role had had a certain degree of ‘emotional impact’ on him, and there were days when he broke down because of it.

Referring to himself as someone who cannot easily ‘switch off’ from the character he plays, Massey said that he had spent many sleepless nights as well. Thinking and feeling like the character one plays is bound to catch up to an actor at times, he added, and it was one of the challenges of his craft.

On the question of why he chose to take up the role, the actor said that the story of his character, Ahmed Shokeen, ‘struck a chord’ with him. Massey talked about how worried he was regarding the growing intolerance in the country, and how he wanted to ‘be the audience’s voice’. “We are the largest democracy but then some people are not allowed to follow their free will,” he said.

The film, which also stars Bobby Deol in a prominent role, is directed by Shanker Raman and produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Drishyam Films.

Love Hostel is available to stream on ZEE5.
