Loveyapa: Writer of Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor's film on adapting Love Today; 'My approach was...'

Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor's recently released movie, Loveyapa, is the Hindi adaptation of the Tamil movie Love Today. Directed by Advait Chandan, the romantic comedy opened to mixed feedback from audiences and critics alike. In a recent interview, the writer of Loveyapa, Sneha Desai, spoke about adapting the rom-com. Desai revealed her approach to writing the Advait Chandan film.

Loveyapa writer on adapting Love Today

In an interview with Mid-Day, Sneha Desai revealed the fresh approach she and Advait Chandan had while working on Loveyapa (an adaptation of Love Today). The writer feels it is unfortunate to see adapting being considered equivalent to 'copying'. In her opinion, adaptation is an art and one has to do it with precision and understanding.

"Love Today is a cult film. Going into it, Advait and my approach was, ‘What are we adding to the story?’ The first shift was the milieu change, which changes how relationships play out. The second shift is modern-day dating language. This is a film for Gen Z. The original must have been written in 2020-21," she told the tabloid.

Sneha recalled she and Advait started working on Loveyapa two years after Love Today was released. Since the concept of dating also evolved, Desai mentioned that the writing for Junaid-Khushi's film had to be different.

"Advait and I worked to understand crushes, affairs, emotional infidelity, nanoships, friends with benefits, and how love with exes is evolving after a relationship is over," she shared.

Starring Junaid and Khushi in lead roles, Loveyapa hit the big screen on February 7, 2025. The movie marked their silver screen debuts. Produced by AGS Entertainment and Phantom Studios, the movie clashed with Himesh Reshammiya's Badass Ravi Kumar at the box office. This clash resulted in tough competition between the two movies at the box office.
