Lyricist Gulzar who had often collaborated with Lata Mangeshkar spoke about working with her and the indelible legacy she has left behind.

In a conversation with PTI, Gulzar called her a rare "karishma" (miracle) who cannot be described in words.

The duo first worked together on 'Mora Gora Ang Layle' from 1963's Bandini, which was Gulzar's debut song. Their last song together was 'Theek Nahi Lagta' that had been recorded more than two decades ago for a film that never saw the light of day.

Gulzar and Mangeshkar notably also created songs for films like Khamoshi, Kinara, Lekin, Rudaali, Masoom, Libaas, Dil Se.., Satya, Hu Tu Tu, and Maachis.

"She was the 'voice of our culture' and will remain the same. She is part of our culture. She is part of everyday culture. TV came later. There used to be radio and one would wake up listening to her voice," Gulzar told PTI.

“Her songs would be played during all festivals from Lohri, Holi, Eid and even weddings. She had become the voice of our culture in her lifetime and continues to be," he said.

Mangeshkar passed away today aged 92 in Mumbai due to multi-organ failure after spending a 28-day-period in hospital. Her last rites ceremony took place in Shivaji Park, where she was cremated with full state honours.
