Maalik, the newest film from Rajkummar Rao, has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. The actor, who usually plays sympathetic protagonists, takes on the role of a gangster in this crime thriller. Nevertheless, the film has only managed a middling weekend gross, even with its revamped avatar and increasing word of mouth.

Weekend box office collection stagnates

Despite starring Rao, Maalik got off to a mediocre start at the box office on Friday, earning only ₹3.75 crore. With an increase of 40%, the film earned ₹5.25 crore on Saturday. There was a small decrease of 3% from the previous day to Sunday, resulting in ₹5.09 crore. The total domestic weekend collection for the film now stands at ₹14.1 crore.

With occupancy rates of 22.43% in the afternoon and 8.05% in the morning, Maalik had a tough time with Sunday's shows. The nighttime and evening shows, with occupancy rates of 29.79% and 22.81% respectively, performed better. For the day, the film's total Hindi occupancy was 20.77%.

Metro... In Dino outpaces competition

Anurag Basu's ensemble drama Metro... In Dino, currently showing in theatres, is proving to be a competitive film. The total collection of the multi-starrer reached ₹38.55 crore after adding ₹4.75 crore on Sunday. Metro... In Dino had a slow start but gradually gained momentum due to positive word-of-mouth. Its first week's earnings were ₹26.85 crore, and they continued to increase steadily during the second weekend. On its second Saturday, the picture earned ₹4.6 crore, a 95% increase, and on Sunday, it earned even more.

Maalik was at odds with Metro... In Dino and Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, which featured debutante Shanaya Kapoor and Vikrant Massey. Despite this, the film had a hard time attracting viewers, earning a meagre ₹41 lakh on Sunday and ₹1.2 crore over its first weekend.

Comparisons with previous Rajkummar Rao films

Additional context is provided by Rajkummar Rao's recent box office success. The opening weekend earnings of his previous film, Bhool Chuk Maaf, were ₹28 crore, nearly twice as much as those of Maalik. Mr & Mrs Mahi, his underwhelming film, still managed to earn ₹16.85 crore in its initial three days, which was more than Maalik's ₹14.1 crore.

It will be important to see how Maalik does in the days to come as it starts airing during the week. Sustained word of mouth will be crucial for the film's success in the face of fierce competition and lower-than-expected box office receipts.
