“Bihar is not a state, it’s a state of mind” – that’s how the latest trailer of Huma Qureshi’s Maharani begins and it delves deep into the pressures that her character Rani Bharti faces after unexpectedly being asked to take charge of the State government.
The show, which will begin streaming on SonyLIV on May 28, is loosely based on Bihar’s former CM Rabri Devi. The trailer shows how Huma’s Rani is first shocked at the sudden turn her life takes after her husband and chief minister Bheema Bharti (Sohum Shah) falls ill. But it hints that’s probably the only time a man decides for her as Rani is seen criticising the idea of only male politicians in the parliament.
However, the audience also gets a front-row view on how Rani, who is apparently content with household work, is now overwhelmed with the bundles of files that need her signature. On top of these challenges, she is also tasked with maintaining law and order in a State where gun-wielding goons welcome the new CM by murdering a family. The infamous fodder scam aka chara ghotala too gets a mention, albeit as dana ghotala in the series.
In an earlier interview with India Today, Huma said, “It’s not often that you get to portray a character that lets you explore so many layers as a performer. Rani Bharti starts off as someone whom we all know and relate to but what she goes on to become is someone few of us can aspire for.”
The series also has Vineet Kumar, Pramod Pathak and Kani Kusruti as part of the cast.
