Vikram Chatterjee and Madhumita Sarcar-starrer Kuler Achaar hit the theatre on July 15. The film that deals with the debate of changing surname after marriage also features Indrani Haldar and Sujan Mukhopadhyay in pivotal roles. Directed by Sudeep Das, Mainak Bhaumik has worked as a creative director of the film.  

In an interview with Etimes, Mainak said that Kuler Achaar deals with a subject that needs attention. “In times of mindless Insta pictures, I feel it is important to hold back for a second and just ponder on an idea that defines the little things in life that we take for granted,” said the director. He added that as a man, they take their surname for granted. “Meanwhile, the majority of women, our mothers and sisters, give up their surnames after marriage,” he said, as the film deals with an event when a newly married bride, Mithi (Madhumita), stubbornly refuses to give up her surname.

Mainak further added that the fact that he would not have the slightest idea of the feeling of giving up the surname is the reason that drew him to the story. He said that he was glad that Sudeep brought it up. “With stellar performers like Indrani and Sujan and a beautiful pairing of Madhumita and Vikram, it feels like I’m glad that I could just be a part of the project as a helper,” added Mainak. 

While a lot of women keep their surname even after getting married, Indrani, who plays the mother-in-law in the film, pointed out that the majority of Indian women don’t enjoy the choice. The actress said that even educated and financially independent women think twice before not changing their surname after marriage. She feels the film is very relatable to the Indian audience.
