Mammootty is now going through a new phase in his acting career, with back-to-back path-breaking films. The megastar of Malayalam cinema, who has always experimented with his film choices, teamed up with director Sanjeev Sivan in 2004, for the horror thriller Aparichithan. The movie, which featured the veteran actor in the titular role, also had Kavya Madhavan, Karthika, and Manya in pivotal roles.
Despite having a limited screentime in the film, Mammootty’s performance as the alcoholic wildlife photographer Raghuram won the hearts of audience. Aparichithan, which emerged as an average grosser at the time of its release, however, earned immense love from the cine-goers over the years. Now, after 20 years of the film’s release, director Sanjeev Sivan is reportedly planning a sequel.
In a recent interaction with IANS, director Sanjeev Sivan revealed that a sequel is indeed in the cards for the 2004 Mammootty-starrer. The renowned filmmaker, who attended the 29th Kolkata International Film Festival, also confirmed that he is planning to join hands with veteran music director MM Keeravani and sound designer Resul Pookutty, for the highly anticipated project. In his conversation with the media, director Sanjeev also confirmed that senior Bollywood actress Zareena Wahab will play a pivotal role in the sequel.
The director also revealed that the project is expected to go on floors in June 2024. However, it is yet to be revealed if Mammootty, who played the titular role in the first installment, will be a part of the sequel. Manoj Pillai has joined the team as the Director of Photography. A Sreekar Prasad is expected to handle the editing. The yet-to-be-titled project is produced by Sanjeev Sivan’s wife, Deepti Sivan. The new updates on the Aparichithan sequel have left the Malayalam cinema audiences highly excited. They are also hoping that Mammootty too, will be a part of the project.

The horror thriller revolves around the troubled life of three best friends, played by Kavya Madhavan, Manya, and Karthika, who elope from their respective homes. Aparichithan dealt with the concept of ‘Ouija board’ which was new to Malayalam cinema at that time. Mammootty appeared as Raghuram, who enters the lives of the girls unexpectedly in the movie, which featured Mahi Vij, Vineeth Kumar, Jagathy Sreekumar, Rajan P Dev, Salim Kumar, and others in key roles. The movie is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
