Manoj Bajpayee has carved a niche for himself by starring in films such as Aligarh, Gangs of Wasseypur, Joram and many more. As the actor gears up for the release of his upcoming film, Bhaiyaa Ji, Manoj spoke about his favourite characters and why he avoids watching his own performances.

Manoj Bajpayee on why he does not watch his work

During an interview with Raj Shamani, Manoj was asked why he does not watch his own work. To this, the actor said that there comes a point where Manoj Bajpayee ends and the actor takes over. He revealed that in the initial stage of his career, whenever he would watch his work, he would only look at the negative things. He said, "I would see whether my double chin is showing or how my nose is looking. You are looking at everything except your performance, which is the real thing. So, I stopped watching.”

Manoj said that he does his job and lets the cameraman do his job. The actor stated that it is necessary for him to stay in character and fulfil all the things that the character demands. “There are people who are assigned to look after things like how I am looking and not looking. That is not my job,” he said.

Manoj Bajpayee: It is important to update yourself with world cinema

To this, the interviewer asked Manoj how he can grow as an actor if he doesn't look into the camera. Manoj said that he can tell without looking at a frame if he has done a good job or not. He revealed that by watching a particular film's frame, you are only learning about that film and not your next project. “The only thing you are learning is that you should lose weight or get a haircut,” he joked.

Manoj added that the way an actor learns is by watching other people’s films and updating yourself with world cinema. He stated that artists need to learn how other actors are changing their interpretation of the craft and how this is being done across the world. “You keep updating and you keep reading—not just books but about daily activities. Everything comes in handy when you are preparing for a character,” Manoj said.
