The world can argue with the wall against the fact that Margot Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn is the best version of the comic book character ever performed on screen. Lady Gaga will step into the shoes of the anti-hero with Joker: Folie à Deux aka Joker 2, but that will not take away the merit held by Robbie. It has been a very long time since we heard about Margot’s future in the DC wing. However, her latest comment on her future as Harley Quinn has raised many eyebrows, hinting that we might never get to see her playing the part again.
Here's what Margot Robbie said
In her latest interview with Variety, Margot Robbie, while talking about Harley Quinn and where she thinks the trajectory goes ahead, said, “I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her. Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, “What are they going to do with her?” The options are endless.”
Here's what we feel
While the comment does shed light on a bright future for the character, it certainly doesn’t look good for the actor who has recently enjoyed a monstrous success with Barbie. Margot Robbie’s comments hint towards the news that she might never play Harley Quinn in the DCU ever again. But Margot, while the options are endless and Harley can go in several directions, your version can never be replaced and needs to have a future.
Come to look at it, Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie is one of the best story arcs that came out of the DCU. She was a woman in love with a madman, a criminal whom she was supposed to treat, but he turned her into himself, and soon they were two inseparable parts of the same coin. Her love for him was unconditional, even when he chose himself over her. Her grin was always evident, but the pain she hid was even deeper.
Remember that moment when in Suicide Squad, Joker comes to rescue Harley Quinn on a chopper but due to the things that unfold, he falls off and Joker chooses to go away without her. In the next moment, an upset Harley is sitting on the top of a car crying, but the moment she sees the squad coming her way, she wipes her tears quickly and raises her hand high with a wide mischievous smile like nothing happened. That is what defines this iconic character. Channeling the sadness to bring out a smile.
So, now when Margot Robbie says that the character needs to pass on to other actors, it hurts the loyal fans. While we welcome other versions with open arms, we cannot let go of Robbie's one. So far, the actor has played Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, The Suicide Squad, and Birds Of Prey. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
