Merry Christmas hit theatres on January 12, 2024, and has received mostly positive responses from critics and viewers. Directed by Sriram Raghava of Andhadhun fame, the neo-noir film is a two-layered plot that comprises a love story and a murder mystery. The film stars Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi as the leading pair.

Plot of Merry Christmas

The film’s plot follows a Before Sunrise-like premise, but with a French twist on it, thanks to the novel it is based on: Le Monte by Frédéric Dard. It follows the story that unfolds due to a chance encounter between Vijay Sethupathi’s Albert and Katrina Kaif’s Maria on Christmas Eve.

Maria has been stood up by her date for bringing her young daughter to the date. As for Albert, he says he has returned from Dubai to find his mother dead. A lonely Albert walks around the city before taking himself out for dinner.

There, he sees Maria and later meets her again in the movie hall. After that bit of serendipity, their journey together, or ‘date’ continued, till Maria gets entwined in a crime scene. Instead of fleeing, he decides to help her out, a complete stranger. What ensues next is an absolute suspense thriller with a healthy dose of dark humour.

What the netizens have said about the film

Many viewers have thronged to see the film and dropped raving reviews. Most have appreciated the film for its unique premise, its murderous spin on two strangers meeting and falling in love, and its slow-burn but attention-grabbing plotline. Nearly every X, formerly Twitter, user raved about the leading pair’s iconic and soft chemistry.

Director Atlee, of Jawan fame, uploaded a review, calling Merry Christmas his ‘favourite narrative of recent times’. How carefully and lovingly he watched the film is evident from his precise appreciation of Vijay Sethupathi for being a performative inspiration, his acknowledgement of the brilliance of Shriram Raghavan, and his straightforward compliment for Katrina.

Twitter users have also been candid and unguarded in expressing their love for Katrina Kaif’s career-best performance. Most users either gave her 10 or full marks for holding her own in every scene against an acting stalwart like Vijay Sethupathi confidently. It is not easy to appear so confident and composed with such ease.
