Ram Kapoor will be seen in JioHotstar's detective series, Mistry, alongside Mona Singh. While attending a media event for the series in Mumbai on June 19, Ram made disturbing and sexually inappropriate comments, which sparked outrage on social media. Not only this, but Ram was also banned from promoting the series further. Now, days after making the comments, the actor admitted his guilt and shared a statement in a new interview.
In an interview with the Times of India, Ram Kapoor admitted that he was guilty of making inappropriate comments at the Mistry event. He said, “Let me start by saying that everything I’ve been accused of saying, I have said it. So, the fact is that I am guilty as charged. But this is what I have to say in my defence. Whenever I’m with people I am comfortable with, I tend to become my bindass (carefree) self. Everyone who knows me and who has worked with me knows that is how I am and that I don’t mean to be offensive.”
Ram also added that he was unaware of the discomfort he might cause the show's team during the event. “I didn’t feel that even once throughout the day. We were laughing and joking. If I had gotten the whiff that they were offended, I would have dealt with it right away,” he said.
Ram did not stop here. He elaborated on the incident and said that if he felt it was inappropriate, why would he say it openly in a hall full of media people? "My character has been questioned for the first time in 25 years, so do acknowledge my justification," he added.
The Mistry actor shared that the comments he made came from a harmless space, but the bottom line is that those team members, who are half his age, did get offended, and that’s not acceptable. "Not only my fans, I have my son who looks up to me and learns from me. I want to tell everyone that please don’t doubt me," he stated.
To him, it doesn't matter what he thinks or what the media thinks is right or wrong, but the OTT platform thought some things were wrong, and from their perspective, it was fair.
He didn't blame them for taking this stance because it would teach him a lesson, so he apologised to each of the team members who were personally offended that day.
Meanwhile, Mistry is the official adaptation of the Emmy Award-winning series, Monk. The Hindi series is set to stream on June 27 on JioHotstar.
