Moonwalk, the latest Malayalam film which is being hailed as a tribute to Michael Jackson, is set for its much-anticipated OTT release soon. Backed by acclaimed filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery, Moonwalk is all set to release on JioHotstar on July 8, 2025, a month after its theatrical release. Though the film did not attract a large audience despite winning positive reviews, Moonwalk is expected to woo more viewers upon its OTT debut. From the refreshing plot to spirited performances, here are the reasons as to why you should watch Moonwalk on JioHotstar this week.
Vinod AK made his directorial debut with Moonwalk, which takes us to the Kerala of 1980s and follows a bunch of youngsters who are gripped by Micheal Jackson’s breakdance moves. Inspired by the global sensation, the youngsters try to imitate both his dance style and appearance as they strive hard to take part in a competition. Amid the onslaught of thrillers and murder mysteries, Moonwalk comes across as a breath of fresh air with its plot that focusses on dance and music.
After Moonwalk released in theatres on May 30, critics have hailed the film as Malayalam cinema’s tribute to Micheal Jackson. Through the tale of the vibrant youth, the film tells how the King of Pop’s popularity reached even the small state of Kerala, inspiring them to take up dance as their passion project. The film is aptly titled Moonwalk, one of the most famous dance moves that the icon popularised and remains unrivalled to this day.
The film places a bunch of youths at the centre of the narrative, most of whom are fresh faces. Anunath, Rishi Kainikkara, Siddharth B and Sujith Prabhakar lead the film along with Arjun Manilal, Nikhil Sahapalan and Nainita Maria forming the rest of the vibrant cast. The film follows the youngsters, who are college students or have to do odd jobs to make ends meet, as they try to bring up MJ’s signature moves.
Director Vinod AK’s film, which he has also co-written with Mathew Varghese and Sunil Gopalakrishnan, takes us back to the glorious 80s. Back when audio cassettes, tape recorders, and video cassettes entertained the audiences. The Moonwalk trailer showed us glimpses of the 80s era, with movies of Padayottam and Sita Aur Geeta, the Bajaj scooter and pre-degrees were the norm. And it is definitely more than funky hairstyles and single earrings.
Filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery, along with Listin Stephen and Jasni Ahmed, have jointly produced this young film.
Prashant Pillai’s music also adds to the mood and settings of the film, giving that much-needed retro vibe. Tracks like Wave have the western compositions and the naadan vibe of small-town Kerala. Radio song, and Oru Pre-degree Kaalam Kinakaalam are the songs worth watching out for in this Malayalam movie.
