Hi Rannvijay Singha! Tell us what does the term ‘Mother’ mean to you?

How are you planning to celebrate this year’s Mother's Day?
Honestly, for me and my brother, we are so grateful for our mother. Every now and then, we say or we remind ourselves to tell how much we love her and also how much we are grateful for having her and generally whenever we are there, we try to do mother-son activities. We go out for drives, we do lots of things, we play cards together and we also go and watch movies together. This year on Mother’s Day, I am not with her. But, we are going be on a video call. Both my kids are going be on a video call with her. I have a surprise for her by sending flowers and hopefully my brother reaches Chandigarh and surprises her. That will be awesome as he will represent both of us! (smiles).

Do you think, over the years, the concept of Mother’s Day has taken the commercial route?
I think it’s cute. Everyday should be Mother’s Day according to me. But, at least, it gives you that one destination date where you want to take time off go to your mother or you are reminded to call her you do something or a party surprise. Or else, you can give her a gift or something. I feel like there should be more Mother’s Day, say... every month!

What are some of your fondest memories of celebrating Mother's Day with your mother?
During a lot of our growing up days, Mother’s Day wasn’t there. But, now, if we are around, we anyway are doing special things with her because we don’t live with our mothers. So, everytime we are with her, we kind of celebrate Mother’s Day. We play basketball together. The reason Harman and I play basketball is because of my mother and dad. My mother has played 9 Nationals for Punjab. And, every time she is in Mumbai, we kind of take her to places to play basketball or if we are in Chandigarh, we play basketball together.

Over the years, do you think that your perspective of Mother's Day has changed?
The perspective of Mother’s Day... hm....(thinks a lot)..I really don’t know if its changed. But, I always like the day. I am one of those guys who is really close to their mothers. I talk to my mother every other day and I tell her how much I love her; how grateful we are to have her. Now, I have a mother - in - law also. so I wish her also. There are also the friends of mine who are mothers. I think it’s become like some kind of recognition and admiration. It’s a day where I can tell my friends also who are amazing mothers and my colleagues who are mothers. I call them and tell them how much I appreciate them as them being like an aspiration and inspiration to us of being such great mothers handling home, kids, work everything.

What are some of the most valuable lessons you've learned about motherhood from your mother?Mothers are so giving and sometimes they don’t even get appreciated. So, it’s tough... but they just do it with a smile, and they keep doing it. I think it’s the most important thing in the world. I mean I feel safe when my mother is around. I have seen my kids when my wife, their mother is around and the amount you give up almost everything in your life for your kids. Mothers all over just do that, so I feel like there is a lot of sacrifice involved like when you say that. There is love without any agenda.

What are some of the most important qualities you hope/ plan to instill in your child as they grow up?
Most of all, I want them to be good human beings. They should be compassionate, sympathetic, loving, respectful, besides being independent and nurturing. If they are passionate about something, they'll work hard and enjoy their life. It will be truly amazing.

How would you describe your relationship with your mother? Is she a proper hands-on mother or a friend -friend types?
My mother used to be a proper hands-on mother till the time I went to boarding school. And, when I came back, she treated me with a little bit of respect like I had grown up and my dad wasn't around at that time as he was at the border. But, after the boarding school, I was back for a couple of years and I went back again to the hostel again for college. She was always this hands- on mother because I had grown up in a boarding school, she'd always be there with me.

Carry on...
She would be my friend and would share stuff with me. Likewise, I too, would share stuff with her. when I got a job with MTV at the age of 20 years, we had become definite friends- sahelis actually! (laughs). We used to have lot of fun. She used to tell me about all her friends and also all the little gossip here and there, the family gossip and vice versa. With my mother, we enjoy playing basketball together, we play cards together, watch same kind of movies and even go out for movies. So much so that we also prefer and eat that same kind of food! (smiles).

What was the first thing that your mother said when you entered 'Roadies'?
She said, “Go get it. I want you to get the motorcycle home”. Throughout my journey, my mother was very confident and fully supportive. She was very excited to see me on TV for the first time.

Can you recall the time when your mother realized that her son is famous/ she is the mother of a celebrity now?
Right after ‘Roadies 1’, people used to come up to her and say "Madam, you are the mother of Rannvijay who comes in TV show Roadies”. I think it’s been 20 years and she has taken it gracefully. At the same time, nobody in my house treats me like a celebrity.

Is there anything that you want to go back in time and change about you or your life?
Nothing, because right now, I am very happy with the life that I have with my kids, my family and mother, my dad, my brother Harman and also everybody around me. That’s why I don’t want to go back and change anything.

Was there something your parents did when you were a kid that you swore, you’d never do yourself with your kids
No man, my parents brought me and Harman very well. I wish we could do all the things that they did effortlessly to bring us up. Yes, I remember at that time there was not so much awareness about nutrition. My mother would give us great food, tasty food but, I would like eat one whole ‘tikki’ with butter, one kg of Jalebi and stuff like that. There was no nutrition awareness at that time. All that I want to say that my mother and all the mothers in the world are simply great for their selfless service towards their children and everyone around them. That’s why, its always said, ‘God cannot be everywhere... Hence, he created Mothers”. (smiles)
