Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie is finally coming to offer a satisfying end to the eponymous private detective’s investigating days. A reprisal of the series Monk, which ran on from 2002 to 2009 on USA Network and bagged eight Emmys, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and one Golden Globe, has been finally readied for the public by creator Andy Breckman.

Since the character of Adrian Monk would be incomplete without Tony Shalhoub, he is reprising it, along with Melora Hardin as his late wife Trudy Monk, Ted Levine as Captain Leland Stottlemeyer, Jason Gray-Stanford as Randall Disher, Traylor Howard as Natalie Teeger, and Héctor Elizondo as Dr. Neven Bell. Among the newcomers, Caitlin McGee will replace Alona Tal to play Monk’s stepdaughter Molly, while James Purefoy will play Rick Eden.

The official synopsis says that the film “follows Monk, a brilliant detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder. He returns to solve one last case involving his stepdaughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.” The film begins after the series had ended, with Adrian Monk finally achieving some semblance of closure regarding his beloved wife’s death.

He also ends up becoming a father figure to his newly discovered stepdaughter Molly. In Mr. Monk’s Last Case, the private detective is forced to come out of retirement and isolation to solve one final case in a COVID-ridden world, adding to the hilarity and irony of the situation, which does not fail to dawn upon his obsessive-compulsive self.

Mr. Monk’s Last Case’s trailer was dropped on November 8th. The latest Monk film will stream December 8, 2023, onwards, on Peacock. The project is helmed by director Randy Zisk of Scandal, who will also executively produce it along with creator Andy Breckman, David Hoberman, and Tony Shalhoub himself.
