Mohanlal and Jeethu Joseph, the celebrated actor-director of Malayalam cinema reunited for the fifth time for Neru, the recently released courtroom drama. The movie, which hit the theatres in December 2023 as a Christmas special release, emerged as a surprise hit. Despite releasing with a moderate pre-release hype, Neru broke quite a few box office records of Malayalam cinema. When it completed its lifetime run at the theatres, the Mohanlal starrer has emerged as a mega blockbuster.
Neru crosses Rs 85 crore mark with its final collection
According to the latest reports by Southwood X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Jeethu Joseph directorial emerged as the fourth all-time highest-grossing Malayalam film, after 2018, Pulimurugan, and Lucifer. Notably, Mohanlal has three entries in the Top 5 all-time highest-grossing films list of Malayalam cinema. The courtroom drama made a lifetime collection of Rs. 85.70 crore from the worldwide box office, with its entire theatrical run.
The Mohanlal starrer made a final total collection of Rs. 47.74 crore from the Kerala box office alone. Neru collected Rs. 5.55 crore from the rest of India’s box office. As per the reports, the Jeethu Joseph directorial made Rs. 32.40 crore from the overseas box office. The box office performance of the much-loved film surprised the cine-goers and Mohanlal fans alike, as they were not expecting a success of this magnitude.

Neru to get a spin-off soon
During the promotional events of Neru, both leading man Mohanlal and director Jeethu Joseph revealed that the superstar’s much-loved character from the film, Adv. Vijayamohan will return to the silver screen with a spin-off, soon. Even though the actor-director duo refrained from divulging more details, it is safe to assume that the team has already cracked an interesting story idea for the next installment of the Neru franchise.
Along with Mohanlal, Neru features a stellar star cast including Anaswara Rajan, Siddique, Priya Mani, Jagadish, Sree Dhanya, Sankar Induchoodan, KB Ganesh Kumar, Nandu, Santhi Maya Devi, and others in the supporting roles. Satheesh Kurup handled the cinematography. Vishnu Shyam composed songs and the original score. Neru, which is currently available for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, is bankrolled by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner Aashirvad Cinemas.
