Earlier this week, when Salman Khan was announced as the presenter of the Hindi version of Kiccha Sudeep’s next, Vikrant Rona, it was widely believed that the Bollywood superstar would distribute it in north India through his Salman Khan Films (SKF). However, not much later, the makers of the 3D fantasy-action drama revealed that multiplex chain PVR Cinemas had tied up with them as the distributors for the Hindi version of the film. Naturally, netizens then wondered what exactly Salman’s role was in this scheme.

As a presenter, said some, Salman’s role is limited to being a host who is in the forefront to ensure that the film gets maximum reach. “It’s like how Anil Thadani’s AA Films distributed both the KGF Films, but Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani presented it through their banner, Excel Movies,” said a Twitter user. A third referred to how Sudeep had earlier presented Ranveer Singh’s 83, while Vikrant Rona producer Manjunath Gowda distributed it through his banner, Shalini Artss.

The consensus, eventually, was that the association with Salman Khan, who has been a close friend of Sudeep for a while, was predominantly for publicity. “SKF is a brand. If Salman attends even one event of Vikrant Rona, that will be enough promotion for them,” read a tweet.

Vikrant Rona is director Anup Bhandari’s first collaboration with Kiccha Sudeep, although he worked on the Kannada dialogues and lyrics of Dabangg 3 earlier. The film, produced by Shalini and Manjunath Gowda and co-produced by Alankar Pandian of Invenio Origin, has music by B Ajaneesh Loknath and cinematography by William David. The film has Nirup Bhandari, Neetha Ashok and Jacqueline Fernandez, Ravishankar Gowda and Madhusudan Rao in pivotal roles and is expected to release in theatres on July 28 in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi and English. The film’s satellite and digital rights have been sold to Zee Kannada and Zee5 respectively.
