Nivin Pauly’s much-anticipated period drama Thuramukham has got yet another release date, and this time the makers will be hopeful that no pandemic restrictions stand in the way. The Rajeev Ravi directorial, which has been postponed twice due to lockdowns, surging COVID-19 cases and issues with its distributors, will now be hitting cinema halls on June 3.

The team had announced the latest release date, while sharing a new poster of film also featuring Indrajith Sukumaran, Joju George, Poornima Indrajith, Arjun Ashokan, Sudev Nair and Darshana Rajendran.

The movie, which spans several decades in the 1900s, begins in the 1920s with construction of the Cochin harbour. This was the time when people from across the State gathered in front of the offices of contractors for labour work. The chappa system where people were tossed a coin that made them eligible for work can into practice from them.

Thuramukham showcases the plights and malpractices the chappa system gave way to, with labourers having to fight among themselves during the later decades for the right to work and earn a living. The movie, which is extensively set in the 1940s and 50s, showcases how the labour force revolted against their practice and abolished the system that existed till 1962.

Nivin plays a labourer named Moidu, who is based in Mattanchery in the movie, scripted by Gopan Chidambaram. Indrajith essays the role of Santagopalan, Joju plays Mymoo and Sudev Nair will be seen as the antagonist.

Nivin, meanwhile, is also part of Abrid Shine’s Mahaveeryar. The movie has him teaming up Asif Ali after almost a decade. Mahaveeryar, which also has Shanvi Srivastava, is a time-travel fantasy satire that is based on a story by author M Mukundan. The film is also co-produced by Nivin under his banner Pauly Jr Productions.
