Only 1 Malayalam film in Google’s top 10 most searched movies of 2025, and it is not a Mohanlal-starrer

The search giant Google has released the top 10 most-searched movies of 2025. The Gen Z love story of Saiyaaraa, starring Aneet Padda and Ahaan Panday, has topped the popular list, and it is not surprising. But what does come across as surprising is that only 1 Malayalam film made it to the Top 10 of Google’s list and it is not even a Mohanlal movie, despite the superstar delivering three back-to-back hits in 2025. It is Unni Mukundan’s Marco that became the most-searched Malayalam movie on Google.

Marco, the most-searched Malayalam film on Google

The 2024 Malayalam film Marco, starring Unni Mukundan in his most brutal avatar yet, was among the Christmas releases last year, making its OTT debut in February this year. Marco is in the fifth spot on most-searched movies on Google. After Saiyaara, Kannada blockbuster Kantara: A Legend Chapter-1 and Rajinikanth’s much-talked-about Coolie are in the second and third spots.

Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2 takes the fourth spot, while the 2009 film Sanam Teri Kasam, which found much acceptance upon its re-release in theatres, follows right behind.

After Marco in the sixth spot, Akshay Kumar’s comedy circus Housefull 5, Ram Charan-starrer Game Changer, and Sanya Malhotra-led Mrs. and the animated film Mahavatar Narsimha make up the list.

No Mohanlal film in Google’s top 10

Mohanlal had three big screen releases this year - L2 Empuraan, Thudarum and Hridayapoorvam - all of which found box office success. L2 Empuraan, which was the highest-grossing Malayalam film before Lokah surpassed it, had also courted much controversy, making national headlines. So it is surprising that no Mohanlal film, including Empuraan, did not made it to the top 10 of Google’s most searched movies.

Marco, on the other hand, also grabbed national attention for the sheer brutality depicted on screen as the protagonist goes all out seeking vengeance after his blind foster brother is killed. Apart from Unni Mukundan, the film also features Jagadish, Kabir Duhan Singh, Abhimanyu Shammi Thilakan, and Ishaan Shoukath. Marco is streaming on SonyLiv via OTTplay Premium.
