Jessica Chastain has won her first Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal in The Eyes of Tammy Faye at the 94th Academy Awards. The Eyes of Tammy Faye was nominated for two Academy Awards in total, and it won the second one for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Chastain is practically unrecognisable beneath layers of makeup and prosthetics throughout the film, playing Faye for over 30 years.

In case you missed catching up with The Eyes of Tammy Faye and are eager to watch the film, it's currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar in India. The film is two hours and six minutes long.

In the biographical drama directed by Michael Showalter, Chastain plays the titular Tammy Faye. It follows the televangelist's rise to stardom and eventual demise, as well as that of her husband, Andrew Garfield, who plays Jim Bakker.

The film followed evangelical power couple Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker as they grew their PTL Club television ministry into a global Christian broadcast network during the 1970s and 1980s.

Their profitable business, however, was shattered in 1987 by a series of high-profile sex and financial scandals, which culminated in Jim Bakker's conviction and imprisonment on multiple fraud counts, as well as the couple's divorce.

Tammy Faye eventually married and changed her last name to Roe Messner, a developer, and recovered her reputation with a documentary and reality show before dying of cancer in 2007.

Despite the film's mixed reviews, critics praised Chastain for portraying a nuanced, sympathetic version of a character who was mocked at the time for her outrageous makeup and wardrobe trends, as well as an emotive television presence verging on histrionic.

Chastain has revealed that she spent several hours a day on set in the makeup chair, getting face prosthetics fitted and imitating Bakker's famously long eyelashes that flowed mascara when she cried on camera.
