OTTplay Awards 2022: Shoojit Sircar wins best director for Sardar Udham

Shoojit Sircar has bagged the best director award at OTTplay Awards 2022. The director has won the award for Sardar Udham. The movie was Shoojit’s tribute to the freedom fighter.

While accepting his award from presenter Mukesh Chhabra, Shoojit was moved. He instilled the importance of remembering the freedom fighters as we live and breathe in a free country since 75 long years.

“We’re celebrating 75 years of independence and we should not forget our revolutionaries. I salute Shaheed Udham Singh and Shaheed Bhagat Singh. I went to college with Shaheed Bhagat Singh,” Shoojit said in his acceptance speech.

The director also recalled facing flak for releasing a movie that was made for the big screens, on OTT. Of course, he had to release the movie on an OTT platform (Amazon Prime Video) but that was due to the COVID-19 situation.

“During the lockdown, when my producer friend Ronnie Lahiri decided to release the film on an OTT platform, I received a lot of flak for releasing the film on OTT,” he recalled.

The movie starred Vicky Kaushal in the lead role – as Sardar Udham. The actor’s performance in the film was widely acclaimed.

Shoojit is a well-known filmmaker in Bollywood. He gained popularity since launching Ayushmann Khurrana in Vicky Donor. Ever since, he has gone on to work in various kinds of films, almost all of which have left an impact on people.

OTTplay Awards and Conclave 2022 took place on September 10. The awards took place from 7.30 pm in Mumbai.
