Director Mari Selvaraj's latest anti-caste drama Maamannan, which hit screens last weekend, has opened to positive reviews. The film, which stars Vadivelu in the titular character, also features Fahadh Faasil, Udhayanidhi Stalin and Keerthy Suresh in the lead. The film has been receiving praise from everyone in the film industry.
The latest to praise the film is director Pa Ranjith, who took to his social media handle, to share his feedback about the film. The Thangalaan director wrote in Tamil, which roughly translates to, "Maamannan vividly portrays how members of the Legislative Assembly belonging to Scheduled Caste, are discriminated against on the basis of their caste, and this, even by political parties whose ideology includes social justice."
He added, "In reality, what are the powers of an MLA of a constituency? Why are people afraid to voice the problems of oppressed castes? What is the reason for the silence against this oppression, even from the parties that preach social justice? Are they properly recognised, empowered and represented??"
Ranjith also requested Udhayanidhi Stalin to look into the discrimination that exists within his own political party. (Udhayanidhi is the Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Government of Tamil Nadu).
The Thangalaan director said that Maamannan asked these questions and provided food for thought. "Udhayanidhi Stalin is truly a commendable actor, producer and minister and deserves great praise. He will be aware of caste discrimination which is still a huge challenge in his party, DMK. Let's hope that he will work towards this after being a part of this film."
Ranjith was also in praise of Vadivelu and Mari Selvaraj for lending a voice to the stories of people from the Arunthathiyar caste, like Ondiveeran, Potti Pakadai and Veerayi through Maamannan.
Maamannan has music by AR Rahman, cinematography by Theni Eswar, editing by RK Selva, and action choreography by Dhilip Subbarayan.
