Vikram Chatterjee’s Pariah was released on February 9. Soon after its release, the film garnered appreciation for its action choreography. The film that is directed by Tathagata Mukherjee has been running in theatre ever since. However, now the film lost its place in Kolkata's esteemed theatre, Nandan.

The French Film Festival takes over

Nandan has always been a coveted theatre for the directors. The makers are saying that the film has been withdrawn from the hall from this Friday. They released a statement: “Pariah was advanced houseful in Nandan 2 for the entire week. But this week, the film did not get a place due to the French Film Festival.” They further wrote, “We don’t know whether the authorities will screen the film again. We are saddened.”

The First French Film Festival in Kolkata has started this Friday in Nandan and hence Nandan 2 is closed. Director Tathagata Mukherjee said that he came to know from the audience that his film was withdrawn from Nandan. In an interview with Anandabazar Online, Tathagata said, “The advanced booking was good from the start. Our film is houseful in several halls. Nandan adds an extra dimension. But we were not informed that there is a film festival and our film was withdrawn.” He also expressed displeasure that the film was screened at Nandan 2 instead of Nandan 1.

‘Pariah focuses on torture on street dogs’

Pariah gives a message against the torture of street dogs. Vikram Chatterjee plays the protagonist. Tathagata said, “Clearly the film sends a spark. Several people from the industry have been supporting us from the start. But it is sad to see people getting deprived like this.”

According to Nandan, the hall is closed due to the festival. Whether Pariah will be shown again after the festival will be considered based on the new releases. There have been several controversies about screening films in Nandan for the last few years. Previously, there was a controversy when the film Avijit Sen’s Projapati, starring Dev and Mithun Chakraborty, did not get a place in Nandan. There were also speculations regarding whether the film Kabuliwala starring Mithun would get a place in Nandan. However, the film was screened there.
