The Malayalam film Pennu Case, starring actress Nikhila Vimal in the lead role, recently made its online debut on Prime Video (Also available for OTTplay Premium subscribers with a top-up). The film revolves around alleged marriage scammer Rohini (played by Nikhila Vimal) and the police investigation into the case. But is she really the con woman or victim, and what is the Malayalam film’s connection to the Hollywood movie The Usual Suspects?
The 2026 Malayalam movie Pennu Case, directed by Febin Sidharth, begins with the wedding of Subash which gets interrupted by a bunch of angry men who allege that she is a marriage fraudster and has cheated all of them. All of them end up in the police station of CI Manoj (Hakim Shahjahan) who probes the case. But the woman, Rohini, claims innocence and that she is merely a pawn in the ploy of the criminal David who killer her boyfriend Arul. It is also revealed that David has connections with a local political leader Jeevan, against whom Manoj had grievance.

Manoj believes Rohini’s tale and sets out to help her. Though he is removed from the case, Manoj helps Rohini escape from police custody and they take her belongings from a bus stand, including a crucial pen drive that is said to include all the evidence against David and Jeevan. As the cops wait for David to turn up, Rohini gives a frightened look at a passerby and the cops take him down. However, it is not David and Rohini too goes missing amid this. Manoj then apprehends Jeevan, convinced that the pen drive has all the evidence. However, that turns out to be songs of legendary singer KJ Yesudas.
A woman cop, who recently rejoined duty, then tells Manoj that the story Rohini had recounted was in fact the plot from a serial she was watching at the police station. Manoj realises that he has been conned and Rohini was indeed a fraudster. Just like how she convinced her ‘husbands’ that only they can help her, Rohini also convinced the cop that only he can find a solution. In the post-credit scenes, Manoj is shown to be on a pilgrimage to a temple where Rohini has found her new victim husband, clearly showing that she continues to trap unsuspecting men in fake marriages.

The Usual Suspects is a 1995 Hollywood film, which revolves around the interrogation of Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey), a disabled con man, who informs the cops about crime lord Keyser Söze after a massacre on a ship. The police believe him, but in the climax, it is revealed that Verbal is not disabled and that he merely fabricated the whole story from the information he got from the station.
Similarly, in Pennu Case, Rohini stitches together her victim story, makes up her fake boyfriend Arul and connection to Jeevan through the information she picks from conversations and articles at the police station. The similarity in how the tables turn in the climax is the only connection between the Hollywood flick and the Malayalam movie.
Though The Usual Suspects continues to be a fan favourite, Pennu Case does not rise above a passable crime comedy from Malayalam with the climax being the high point.
