Actor Sarathkumar recently revealed the criteria that he looked at while choosing roles in a film. In an interview with Galatta, the actor revealed that it was important that his character had substantial to do.

"I don't just want to play a heroine's father. When the script of Varisu was narrated to me, I liked the story because it also revolved around the relationship between a father and son. It was an intriguing film. I had a crucial role to play and Vijay accepting and agreeing to do the film was big."

Sarathkumar, who is now gearing up for Por Thozhil, was last seen in Ponniyin Selvan 2. "Peria Pazhuvettairayar is a character that everyone talks about in the film. He is Nandini's husband. So, if you ask who is the hero and heroine, I am one too. It's a pivotal role."

He added, "There are scenes that justify the same. For instance, when Aditha Karikalan says he cannot win a war against me, that means I am a hero there. Likewise during my introductory scene, when I ask Karthi (who played Vanthiyathevan) if was counting my scars from the battlefield, he says that he has grown up listening to the same. Periya Pazhuvettarayar is a legendary character. He was only one weakness- that he fell for the beauty of his wife. And that's pretty normal."

Sarathkumar added that when he played characters like Kanchana, he not only played a unique role, but also kept the image of hero intact. "'It helped me reach a different generation of an audience. Sometimes when I think that the role won't do justice, I put my foot down. As a hero, I have to also consider what the audience that comes to watch me would think."

Sarathkumar will soon be seen in Por Thozhil, in which he will be seen along with Ashok Selvan. The film is directed by debutant Vignesh Raja.
