We had told you the teaser launch of Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan would take place in Thanjavur Big Temple by the first week of July. However, the latest buzz is that the event has been pushed to a later date. Unconfirmed reports suggest that it will happen by the last week of July. Hearsay is that the venue has been changed, too.
According to sources, the Ponniyin Selvan teaser launch won’t happen at the Brihadeeswara temple, as said earlier. While it is true that the team travelled to Thanjavur and fixed the location, due to unforeseen reasons, the plan has been called off. On the other hand, there were rumours that the editing of the teaser has caused the delay.
A source in the know tells OTTplay, "A promo video will be out soon, which will have the date of the teaser launch."
Ponniyin Selvan aka PS-1, directed by Mani Ratnam, is made on a whopping Rs 500-crore budget. The makers had confirmed that the first part will be released on September 30. The film is based on the famous 1955 Tamil novel (bearing the same name), written by journalist Kalki Krishnamurthy.
Ever since the novel became a hit, many moviemakers attempted to work on it, but could not turn their pursuit into a film.
The epic novel is based on the 10th-century Chola period and the fights within the ruling clan. The role played by spies of the empire, its military leaders and the politics behind it are all shown in the movie.
Legendary Tamil actor MG Ramachandran (MGR), who later went on to become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, tried his hand at making Ponniyin Selvan after the novel hit the stands. His attempt, too, did not lead to any results due to various reasons. Then, Mani Ratnam himself tried to make the film in 1999 and 2009 but nothing materialised.
The script of the Ponniyin Selvan adaptation is written by Mani Ratnam along with Elango Kumaravel and dialogues have been penned by B Jayamohan.
Ponniyin Selvan has an impressive star cast including Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Shobitha Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lakshmi, and others.
While AR Rahman composed the music, Ponniyin Selvan has Ravi Varman on cinematography and Sreekar Prasad on editing.
It was shot across India and a few locations in Thailand.
The shooting for Ponniyin Selvan commenced in December 2020 and concluded in September 2021.
