Superstar Rajinikanth on Wednesday shared a photo of himself along with Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to share the screen space with Amitabh after a gap of over three decades.
"After 33 years, I am working again with my mentor, the phenomenon, Shri Amitabh Bachchan in the upcoming Lyca’s "Thalaivar 170" directed by T.J Gnanavel. My heart is thumping with joy!" Rajinikanth captioned while sharing the photo.
Both Rajinikanth and Amitabh looked overjoyed about reuniting on the screen after an extensive hiatus. Rajinikanth played supporting roles in movies headlined by Amitabh during the early days of his career. The two acting legends shared screen space in movies like Geraftaar (1985) and Hum (1991).
It was during the making of Hum, Rajinianath stumbled on an idea for a gangster drama set against the Mumbai backdrop. And Rajinikanth later developed that idea with director Suresh Krissna. That movie is called Baashha, which became the biggest-ever hit of 1995.
Baashha tells the story of a reformed gangster who lives a rather peaceful life in Chennai after giving up his life in crime in Mumbai. The movie became a milestone in the Tamil film industry.
Thalaivar 170 boasts of a star-studded cast, including Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan. It also stars Rana Daggubati, Fahadh Faasil, Manju Warrier, Dushara Vijayan and Ritika Singh among others.
Thalaivar 170 went into production earlier this year in Kerala. Director TJ Gnanavel, known for his social drama Jai Bhim, is directing the movie. Similar to his previous movie, Thalaivar 170 is also expected to be a commentary on social injustices in the country.
The buzz is Rajinikanth is said to be playing the role of a retired cop. However, an official confirmation on the same is awaited.
It's noteworthy that Rajinikanth essayed a similar role in director Nelson's Jailer, which became one of the biggest hits in the superstar's career.
