Superstar Rajinikanth on Friday condoled the untimely death of G Marimuthu, who shared screen space with him in his latest blockbuster Jailer. Marimuthu passed away on September 8 following a cardiac arrest at the age of 57.

"Marimuthu was a wonderful person. His death has shocked me. My heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family," tweeted Rajinikanth.

G Marimuthu became friends with Rajinikanth on Jailer sets

In Jailer, Marimuthu played one of the confidants of Varma, the main angataonist. He had ample screen time in the movie, even though it boasted a huge star cast, including Rajinikanth, Shivarajkumar, Mohanlal, Tamannaah and Ramya Krishnan among others.

Marimuthu managed to shine in the character named Panneer, who was sort of an accountant to Varma (Vinayakan), an idol smuggler. The high point of his performance comes at a time when he is tasked with keeping tabs on Rajinikanth's Muthuvel Pandian and ensuring the latter sticks to the original plan.

In the run-up to the release of Jailer, Marimuthu expressed his gratitude for landing the role in Jailer, which allowed him to spend a lot of time with Rajinikanth. He noted that he grew closer to Rajinikanth as they discussed several topics during the making of Jailer.

Marimuthu was also a big admirer of Rajinikanth as he never missed an opportunity to praise the Superstar.

Earlier, Jailer director Nelson also shared his message of condolence on his social media handles. "Saddened!! Rest in peace #Marimuthu sir ! Remembering the times with you…," he tweeted.

Marimuthu's untimely death has sent a shock wave across the Tamil film industry. He has been part of the entertainment ecosystem for over two decades now. He long nurtured the dream of becoming a director and it came to pass in 2008 with Kannum Kannum. He also directed the 2014 thriller Pulivaal. However, his actual claim to fame was his performance in the popular Tamil television series Ethir Neechal.
