Rani Mukerji played Shivani Shivaji Roy in the 2014 female cop film Mardaani, produced by YRF. After the film's unexpected success, they reunited for Mardaani 2 five years later. Rani is poised to reprise her role as Shivani Shivaji Roy in the upcoming chapter of Mardaani, five years after the second part. The two films established the franchise as one of the rare female-led ones in Indian cinema.

Mardaani 3 filming schedule and production details

Reports in Pinkvilla indicate that Rani will begin filming the next Mardaani film in the first quarter of 2025, according to insiders familiar with the project. Aditya Chopra and the actor hold the Mardaani franchise in high regard. An in-house team of authors has developed a concept that lives up to the reputation of the first two installments, and after much deliberation, they have finally approved it. The writing team is currently finalising the screenplay, leading to the film's pre-production phase, according to a source familiar with the project.

According to the source, the film's unfavorable turn will serve as a major plot point, bolstering the strength of the case and the protagonist, similar to the previous two films. The terrifying antagonists in the Mardaani films, played by actors like Tahir Raj Bhasin and Vishal Jethwa, have become a trademark of the series.

The source added that the makers will be pitting a strong personality against Rani Mukerji in the new chapter, so the journey will continue.

Rani is eager to return to her action avatar form. Shivani Shivaji Roy is a strong and empowering role, and she likes portraying it. The actor is doing that with Mardaani—she's spearheading a franchise in India, which is rare. Rani, true to her promise of only appearing in big-screen films, will release the film in theatres.

Teasers and other projects

Intriguingly, YRF also teased the upcoming Mardaani chapter in the preview that commemorates the first part's tenth anniversary.

Before Rani starts filming Mardaani 3, Shonali Bose's family drama for Junglee Pictures should wrap up.
