The two seasons of After Life follow Tony Johnson (Gervais), a journalist whose life changes for the worse overnight after his wife dies from breast cancer. Set in the fictional town of Tambury, the series takes the audience through Tony’s ambition to live long enough to punish the universe for his wife’s death. He sets out to do whatever he wants, no questions asked. After Life’s narrative features Tony transforming from a responsible family man into someone who truly doesn’t care about anything.

The two seasons, which are streaming on Netflix, have garnered praise for its humour, emotionally resonant scenes and incredible cast. The 12 episodes of After Life also star Tom Basden, Tony Way, Diane Morgan, Mandeep Dhillon, Ashley Jensen and David Bradley. The third season of After Life is expected to release in early 2022.

Discussing his future projects with Netflix, Gervais previously divulged that his partnership with Netflix will continue even after the series has concluded. After the third season of After Life, Gervais will shift his focus to three projects that are already in the pipeline.

“I've got it down to three totally different ideas and Netflix has already bought it because I told them I want to end After Life now and so they said, ‘OK, we want the next thing’,” he said, in conversation with SiriusXM.
