Tim Burton is gearing up for yet another wonderfully weird creation, this time based on the goth tween from everyone’s favourite macabre family, The Addams Family. The Netflix series will see Scream star Jenna Ortega take on the role of Wednesday Addams, and it seems the star is as excited about it as Burton fans are.
In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Ortega opened up about her preparation for the role, revealing that it entailed a physical transformation the likes of which she had never done before. In addition to changing her physical appearance, which involved cutting her hair short, the actress also had to perfect the character’s eccentric mannerisms and speaking style as well.
Although she found the role a challenging one, Ortega said she wanted to do justice to the character as best she could, seeing how loved Wednesday is among audiences. She calls essaying the role of the quirky, and at times scary, character an exciting and even "insane" experience. Ortega also teased that the results would be as surprising to the audience as they were to her.
The actress also had nothing but good things to say about her director as well, saying he was one of the "sweetest" filmmakers she had the pleasure of working with and said she was awed at how detail-oriented he was.
The upcoming series is based on a character from The Addams Family, a cartoon created by Charles Addams. It follows the adventures of a wealthy, eccentric, and macabre family. Wednesday is the daughter of the family, with a keen interest in all things dark and destructive.
The eight-episode series is slated to premiere on Netflix sometime this year.
