Popular singer Sona Mohapatra is all geared up for the release of the documentary Shut Up Sona, based on her life on July 1 on ZEE5. Directed by Deepti Gupta, the documentary reflects the feisty singer’s fight to get equal space in the ‘male-dominated’ music industry. Just before the release of the film, the team dropped another song, Piya Sen Naina, on Wednesday. Composed by Ram Sampath, the song is based on Hazrat Amir Khusro’s lyrics.

The song, Piya Se Naina captures a glimpse of Sona’s musical journey. The video shows her journey in the industry, her concerts with her team. The melodious song encapsulates the rustic flavours of northwestern India.

Sona is known to be vocal against bigotry in India. Shut Up Sona follows the singer’s journey, focusing on the legal notice slapped on her for singing devotional songs in ‘obscene’ attire. According to Pinkvilla, Sona said in a podcast that all her life, she was asked to toe the line. She said that she has been asked to be quiet and not to voice her opinion. “As a singer, artiste, performer and producer, I've been making my way in a man's world and the rules are skewed in their favour,” said Sona, adding that she has been asked to shut up for being vocal.

Sona clarified that the documentary is her response to those diktats. She further explained that the film showcases her as an artiste and her ‘unfiltered, raw glory’. The singer admitted that she had to fight her way through a male-dominated domain and the film captures her passion for seeking truth through her art. The film focuses on the conflict between medieval and modern, archaic and change, and so on.

Director Deepti Gupta pointed out that the documentary is about a woman whose pursuit of equality turns into an inspiring journey for many.

Produced by Sona, the documentary will stream on Zee5 from July 1.
