JP Thuminad had pitched the idea of what is now his debut Kannada directorial, Su From So, 6 years ago. Over the years, it has had several revisions, but the very first change, he says, is what gave it the tone and flavour it has today. Speaking to Cue Studio as part of the film’s Malayalam dubbed version’s release, JP said that when he gave actor-filmmaker Raj B Shetty a narration many years ago, the latter asked him to chop out 70% of what he’d written and to expand the remaining 30% as a full-fledged comedy. This change of direction is what has made the film what it is today, he says.
JP Thuminad: Raj said 30% of what I wrote was what the film was meant to be
“When I told Raj a line about Su and So, the initial idea was for a far more serious film. There was comedy, but it was limited. Raj asked me to cut 70% and said that the remaining 30% was what the film was meant to be. That 30% was the comedy bit and he suggested that I should keep the film in that genre. It is only then that the world of Su From So was created,” he said.
In following this approach, what Raj and JP then created was a start-to-finish laughter riot, with actors like Shaneel Gautham, Prakash Thuminad, Mime Ramadas and Deepak Rai Panaje getting prime space onscreen. Amid the laughs, JP also stitched in the serious bit of the story, which, he said was something he’d been meaning to address for long, having seen the issues faced by women in his friends and family circles, on account of misogyny, sexism and toxic male behaviour unleashed against them.

After taking the Karnataka box office by storm and going from a little over 100 shows to over 900 and becoming the highest grossing Kannada film of 2025 so far, Su From So is now ready to meet audiences in Kerala. The film releases on August 1 in its Malayalam dubbed version, the initial response to which has been encouraging, with those who caught the premiere on July 30 praising the dubbing quality.
