The superhit Kannada comedy Su From So is currently streaming on JioHotstar (also via OTTplay Premium). The film, written and directed by JP Thuminad, holds the distinction of being the highest grossing Kannada movie of the year so far, a record likely to be broken by Kantara: Chapter 1 and then, maybe, Devil and Mark. Unlike these other films, though, what sets Su From So apart is that it is a film made on a modest budget of Rs 4.5 cr only, which then reaped rich dividends. At last count, the film, produced by Raj B Shetty, was said to have grossed Rs 122 crore and was still playing in select theatres.

The exorcism of Sulochana from Someshwara

In the film, JP was Ashoka, a painter in Marlur, with a crush on a girl, Chaitra (Tanishka Shetty) in the neighbourhood. One night, while returning home from a wedding reception, while walking past her house, Ashoka overhears a conversation about her taking a shower and figures this is his chance to take a quick peek.

Ashoka’s mission goes awry, though, when the person in the bathroom turns out to be Chaitra’s grandmother, who didn’t catch a glimpse of the peeping tom. In the ensuing hue and cry, everyone’s right-hand man Ravi Anna comes to investigate what happened and other villagers also fan out to find the ‘intruder’.

As Ashoka tries to make a quick escape, he almost gets caught red-handed, but then pretends to be possessed to get out of this jam. Convinced that he’s dodged a bullet, Ashoka goes him and crashes out, only to wake up and realize that the while village is now under the impression that the spirit in him needs to be exorcised. He plays along for a bit, even as the villagers identify the spirit as Sulochana from Someshwara, but when the measures to cleanse him become too much for Ashoka to handle, he decides to come clean.

To his bad luck, though, no one takes him seriously. Enter Karunakar guruji (Raj B Shetty), who believes that Sulochana’s family can, perhaps, convince her to leave Ashoka’s body. They find her daughter, Bhanu (Sandhya Arekere), a poor soul who’s been subjected to sexual taunts by other villagers and her uncle too, with the latter intent on sleeping with her. While Sulochana was still alive, none dared mess with Bhanu, but now that she is by herself, they see it as an open invitation to mess around with her.

She pours her heart out to ‘her mother’ in Ashoka, and finds solace in these one-sided conversations. For him, her plight is an eye-opener – things he’d taken for granted as normal male behaviour, watching porn, passing sexual comments, or trying to sneak a peek when a girl is changing her clothes or taking a bath, are all exactly what become the bane of someone like Bhanu. To free Bhanu from this exploitation, Ashoka fully embraces Sulochana and brings ‘her’ daughter back to Marlur, where she then finds her soulmate, Ravi Anna.

With Bhanu now in safe hands, the villagers are finally convinced that Sulochana can leave Ashoka in peace. But he knows just too well what a potent weapon she is for him whenever he wants to get out of a problematic situation.
