With The Batman, director Matt Reeves has taken the mantle of bringing to the screen one of the most popular and beloved superheroes of the present day. But it seems that the filmmaker is hesitant when it comes to pursuing a project in another well-known superhero franchise, namely the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The director recently talked about why he had his doubts when it came to helming an MCU film.
In a conversation with Variety, the filmmaker talked about how he had immense respect for Marvel Studios' president Kevin Feige as well as the filmmakers who helmed films in the MCU. But despite that, he was doubtful whether he himself would be able to take on the responsibility of a Marvel film, citing how uncertain he would be to direct a film that is part of a big, well-established franchise.
He talked about how he preferred to choose films that allowed him a certain degree of freedom when it comes to exploration as a filmmaker, saying he would feel ‘lost’ otherwise. “If I have to come into something that’s already set too firmly, then I think I would get lost,” he said. He also added that the filmmakers would not be happy with his efforts either.
The Batman is a standalone story based on the popular character, and is not part of the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) either.
Robert Pattinson will essay the role of the titular superhero in the film, which also stars Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell.
The Batman will be released in theatres on March 4, 2022.
