Bengali cinema has a rich cultural heritage, carrying the traditions of Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak, and then filmmakers like Rituparno Ghosh, Goutam Ghose, and Buddhadeb Dasgupta. India Dot In Dot Pixels made a list of the renowned directors from each state. Srijit Mukherji, who won the national award four times, shared the report and expressed joy.
The organisation made the report based on the information spanning from 1967 to 2021. It shows that Bengalis won the national award 21 times. Malayalam films are in the second position, winning 14 times.
Bengali films have always been critically lauded across India – even globally. Many films did not do well at the box office and yet became classics. Even today, small-budget Bengali films struggle to fight with big-budget films. Among the National Award-winning filmmakers, Bengal contributes the most. On his social media, Srijit wrote, “You see something like this early in the morning and you tell yourself, doesn’t matter if you drop dead right now, the journey has been worth it.”
Srijit shared the news on Thursday morning. He has been working in Mumbai as well. He made a number of Hindi films and OTT shows, including Sherdil, Shabash Mithu, and so on.
