Navarasa Nayaka Jaagsh says that if Chapter 1 introduced audiences to the main characters, Chapter 2 is where the story actually takes off.
A year ago, director Vijayaprasad put the first of his two-part film Thothapuri out in the market along with Kantara and Ponniyin Selvan. The adult comedy, which has Jaggesh in the lead, sank without a trace and subsequently came to Zee5 Kannada. Given that Thothapuri: Chapter 1 was a box office washout, it was thought that the second part would skip a theatrical outing, but is it now set for release, albeit with absolutely no on ground promotions whatsoever. In fact, producer KA Suresh is the one leading the release, with no word from director Vijayaprasad, prompting questions if all is well between the duo.
After months of speculation about whether Thothapuri: Chapter 2 will get a theatrical release after all, producer Suresh first announced it would be out on August 11, in a clash with Superstar Rajinikanth’s Jailer. However, with Jailer taking up pretty much most of the available screens, Suresh had no choice but to push the film ahead. Yet again, there was no word for quite a while, until the trailer came out on the occasion of Ganesha Chaturthi. Even then, there was no release date mention, but a couple of days later, it was said that the film will be in theatres on September 28.
Thothapuri: Chapter 2, much like the first film, will revolve around the main cast, Jaggesh, Aditi Prabhudeva, Daali Dhananjaya, Suman Ranganathan, Veena Sundar and Hema Dutta, among others.
The trailer, which was released by Shivarajkumar, is indication that Chapter 2 will have Dhananjaya in a much more important role than he had in the first part. Vijayaprasad’s film is about caste and religion, but in the spirit of communal harmony. For this, Chapter 2 has not one, but two inter-faith couples – Ere Gowda (Jaggesh) and Shakeela Banu (Aditi Prabhudeva) and Dhananjay (Daali Dhananjaya) and Victoria (Suman Ranganathan).
Thothapuri: Chapter 2 takes off from where Chapter 1 left and follows the relationship dynamics of the lead couples, Ere Gowda, Shakeela Banu, Dhananjay and Victoria and the circumstances under which the latter decides to go into the service of God. Vijayaprasad’s serious subject is, however, within the realms of an adult comedy and has, therefore, been censored ‘A’.
Considering that Thothapuri: Chapter 1 is on Zee5 Kannada, it is expected that the second instalment will follow suit and be on the platform shortly.
