Tobey Maguire is all set to return to the big screen after a hiatus of 7 years, with Babylon. The upcoming project is being helmed by the Oscar winning director Damian Chazelle, who is also the man behind critically acclaimed movies like La La Land and Whiplash.
He was last seen on-screen in 2014’s Pawn Sacrifice. The actor had also lent his voice to the character of Adult Tim and the narrator later in 2017’s animated film, The Boss Baby.
Scripted by Chazelle, Babylon is set in the late 1920s during the timeframe of Hollywood transitioning from silent films to talkies. It will also depict the rise and fall of several characters.
The project already has a long list of celebrated actors which includes Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Olivia Wilde. Others joining this ode to Hollywood’s Golden age include Max Minghella, Phoebe Tonkin, Samara Weaving, Spike Jonze, Li Jun Li, Eric Roberts, Katherine Waterston, Flea, Damon Gupton, Rory Scovel, PJ Byrne and Lukas Haas. Details regarding casting are still under wraps as filming begins next week.
Babylon isn't Maguire’s first stint appearing in a 1920s based film. Earlier, he had essayed the role of Nick Carraway in Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer The Great Gatsby. The movie was based on the book of the same name. Leonardo played the titular character Jay Gatsby in the film.
Babylon is already the talk of the town and has been touted as “The Great Gatsby on steroids”.
Paramount Pictures has announced that Babylon will opt for a limited theatrical release in December 2022. It will be released worldwide in January 2023. Maguire will also serve as an executive producer on the film alongside Adam Siegel and Helen Eastbrook.
