Uncharted: Sony declares Tom Holland's film a 'new hit movie franchise', crosses $100 million on first weekend

Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland's new film Uncharted turned out to be a roaring success. The film has crossed over $100 million globally, breaking the myth that theatrical features won't work in this streaming-obsessed industry and that theatrical releases still have an audience. Sony declared that the film has collected about $106.4 million in just one weekend. 

Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman and CEO, Tom Rothman congratulated the staff of the company for delivering a blockbuster hit in his e-mail, he sent on Monday, following the success of the film. The makers decided to go ahead with a theatrical release and not sell the $120 million production due to financial desperation during the pandemic. They waited for the right time to release it and it's been proven. Uncharted was predicted to collect $30 million over four days at the domestic box office but it ended up collecting $51 million, leading to a total of $139 million globally. In his email, according to Deadline, he further declared Uncharted “a new hit movie franchise.” The director too reportedly is hopeful about a sequel.

Unlike many other production studios, Sony continues to maintain the 45-day window on big films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Ghostbusters: Afterlife Uncharted. The company has grossed over $3 billion globally since theatres reopened last year after the COVID-19 situation eased out.

The film Uncharted took two years for the making. It was one of the major production that got stalled and completely shut due to the pandemic. Sony can brag more with the Presidents Day weekend box office as Holland's Spider-Man: No Way Home ranked third in its tenth weekend of release. It is predicted that the film, which brought all spideys together, has a good shot at collecting $800 million domestically.
