Kollywood fans were excited last January when the box office witnessed a huge battle between Vijay's Varisu and Ajith's Thunivu. After keeping the audience waiting with their release dates, both the movies finally hit the screens on January 11.
Thunivu, which started its shows across Tamil Nadu at 1 am, took the lead on day one in the state, while Varisu, which commenced shows at 4 am, went on to take the lead after a couple of days. Both the projects despite being average in terms of content turned out to be money spinners.
As expected, fans of both the stars indulged in fights on social media for several weeks while discussing the gross the films made from across the globe. The makers of Thunivu refrained from revealing collections though they claimed that the Ajith-starrer is the real Pongal winner.
On the other hand, team Varisu announced that the Vijay-starrer earned more than 300 crores from different territories. According to trusted sources, Thunivu made around 200 crores from across the world. Both the movies are considered to have put up career best figures for the stars. Thunivu dropped on Netflix after a month while Varisu started streaming on Amazon Prime after six weeks.
PVR, the leading Indian multiplex chain which merged with INOX recently, has now announced its Q4 results. They have reported a loss of 333 crores and have revealed the collection Pathaan, Thunivu, Varisu, Waltair Veerayaa, Ved, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar and Veera Simha Reddy have earned.
Varisu has grossed 208 crores from Indian box office while Thunivu managed to earn 144 crores from the country. The collections the films earned from PVR INOX screens are 27.3 and 19.5 respectively. Needless to say, this has led to another fan war on social media.
