The country as a whole is currently praising one of the most successful releases of the year, Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal. Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Pictures, the film features Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, alongside Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna in leading roles. The movie has struck the right chord with audiences, becoming one of the most loved films of the year. As viewers continue flocking to theaters, it has been announced that Chhaava will be tax-free in Madhya Pradesh. Now, Goa has also followed suit, making the film tax-free in the coastal state as well.
Goa’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle to share the news, praising Vicky Kaushal and Chhaava while announcing its tax-free status in the state. "छत्रपती संभाजी महाराज की जय! It gives me great pleasure to announce that the movie Chhaava, based on the life and sacrifice of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, will be tax-free in Goa," he wrote.
He further added, "The movie, which highlights the valor and courage of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in his fight for Dev, Desh, and Dharma, played by Vicky Kaushal, brings a glorious chapter of history to the big screen. The sacrifice of the second Chhatrapati of Hindavi Swarajya, who valiantly fought against the Mughals and the Portuguese, is an inspiration for all of us. देश धरम पर मिटने वाला। शेर शिवा का छाया था।। महापराक्रमी परम प्रतापी। एक ही शंभू राजा था।।”
Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Pictures, Chhaava is based on the life of the second Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who ruled from 1681 to 1689. The film, set on a grand scale, also stars Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai Bhonsale, Divya Dutta as Sambhaji Maharaj's stepmother Soyarabai, and Akshaye Khanna as Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Chhaava hit Indian screens on February 14, 2025.
According to Sacnilk, on its sixth day, Chhaava managed to surpass its Day 1 collection of ₹31 crore, earning approximately ₹32 crore. This takes the film's total earnings beyond ₹200 crore, making it one of the biggest post-pandemic blockbusters. As the film completes a week in theaters, a similar box office trend could see it setting new records.
