X-Men filmmaker Simon Kinberg opens up about what he learned from directing Dark Phoenix

Filmmaker-producer Simon Kinberg has been behind the X-Man franchise and spin-offs as well as other films like Deadpool. He made his directorial debut with the Sophie Turner-led Dark Phoenix in 2019, a sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse. 

In an interview with Discussing Film, he opened up about his takeaway from helming his first film and emphasised how not a single department of any project should be sidelined. 

Kinberg said that he learned a lot and said: "the lessons would be too long for this conversation." 

"So what I learned from Dark Phoenix, that I brought to this, was just to really make sure that there's no category, department, or aspect of the movie that you take for granted. As a director, because there's so many people that are working at the same time trying to fulfill your vision, you can take for granted some things. If you don't keep an eye on as much as you can possibly keep an eye on, you'll end up with compromised versions of your vision," Kinberg told the outlet.

The filmmaker's latest outing is The 355, about a group of international spies who band together to prevent World War 3. 

Meanwhile, Dark Phoenix is the origin story of Jean Gray, the X-Man with the telepathic and telekinetic powers, and her transition to Phoenix. 

The film also stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, and Jessica Chastain.
