Yami Gautam was last seen as a police officer Jyoti Deswal who set Abhishek Bachchan’s Ganga Ram Chaudhary straight in the Netflix film Dasvi. Just before that she was seen as a school teacher holding her own students hostage in the thriller Thursday. Her filmography boasts a wide variety of genres and types of roles and the actress now wants to be a part of a costume drama.

Speaking to Pinkvilla, Yami explained that she has been consciously picking up these wide-ranging characters and stories since 2019. She said that she wants to defy the notion that “there shouldn’t be a set template” for an actor.”

“I would love to be a part of a costume drama. I love these larger than life fantasy films that are just beyond your imagination and take the audience in a very different world. I love that genre. It could be a biopic, or something in comedy again maybe because I love that. I enjoy it as a viewer too. Thriller is one favourite genre and I have realised that a lot of people like it but the character has to be interesting too,” she further said.

Yami also said that she doesn’t just want to be a leading lady like she was in Bala, which she believes gave her more recognition. In the dramedy, she shared the screen space with Ayushmann Khurrana, a man suffering from male pattern baldness. She played an internet micro-celebrity named Pari, who becomes Bala’s (Ayushmann) love interest. Also seen in the film was Bhumi Pednekar, Sunita Rajwar and Seema Pahwa.

Yami will be seen next in Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s Lost , which she wrapped the shoot in August last year. The film centres around the issue of media integrity and also features Pankaj Kapur, Rahul Khanna, Neil Bhoopalam, Pia Bajpiee and Tushar Pandey in pivotal roles.

The actress is also part of OMG 2 – Oh My God! 2 in which she will s hare the screen space with Akshay Kumar. The spiritual sequel to Umesh Shukla’s 2012 satirical comedy also has Pankaj Tripathi and Arun Govil. The first poster of the film, launched in October last year, featured Akshay as Lord Shiva.
