Karthik and Moni are childhood best friends, and continue to be so even as they grow up. In fact, they become so famous as friends, that they run social media pages under their combined names, and even have a strong say in each other’s life decisions. But what happens when life happens and their friendship is put to trial?
Director Suseenthiran’s films never had romance as its centre stage. Of course, it played a vital role. If his Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu had a romance that never was spelt out, his Aadhalal Kadhal Seiveer was everything that a careless romance between a couple could go wrong and resulting in a bitter reminder. But when Suseenthiran makes a film titled 2K Love Story, he strongly said the film is anything but a love story. Of course, the film is set in the modern times, throws in lingos of today’s generation and deals with romance on par with friendship, but 2K Love Story in an attempt to be fresh, becomes a cringe fest.
Karthik and Moni are the centre of 2K Love Story and we are shown the thick friendship that runs between them. It is so much so that we see Moni making all crucial decisions for Karthik who happilu obliges. The film, from the start, in an attempt to talk about the modern day “boy-girl bestie” concept, gets on a skewed idea of what is friendship and confuses that a genuine one is only when friends force their decisions on the other. 2K Love Story wants to project itself progressive by showing that youngsters of opposite gender can be friends, but still manages to call homosexual women as “andha maari girls” when a girl is given the idea to tell that she is not interested in boys in order to stop getting approached by men.
2K Love Story makes some bizarre decisions even at serious times. One of them being Moni’s parents wanting her daughter’s husband should have a sibling who will get married to Karthik so that the best friends would stay in touch and could help with their life problems. Even then, the first question raised is how would they find a groom and bride from the same family for the best friends when they hail from different castes. The film, right from its controlling nature, to overtly attachment issues, begin to misconstrue what real friendship means. While it smartly evades to make Moni and Karthik a romantic pair, the other sleazy decisions that Suseenthiran makes does not help either.
2K Love Story is a flatlined and skewed take on modern day friendships and relationships. It does not make anything Gen Z by throwing in some modern-day terms either. Overall, the film renders to be dull, and unengaging tale.
